Deep thoughts on baseball and life

$

Remembering where we've been while getting where we're going. The life of baseball.

A recent trip to the Lake Elsinore Storm's locker room got me thinking about our collective journey in baseball, whether it be as players or fans.

The Padres single A affiliate proudly displays the names and numbers of the greats that have passed through its hallowed halls. Above their former lockers are the names of Jake Peavy, Jedd Gyorko and Chase Headley, to only name a few.  Seeing those names made me appreciate the early stages of their journey and ours.

Life can be a lot like baseball. Like players who are drafted, we as young adults get hired by our first employers. As players toil in the minors, we toil in low-level positions in our companies, learning and trying to stand out amongst our co-workers. Ultimately we both hope to excel in our chosen professions and advance, players to the Majors and we to management roles. At some point in the future the players will either retire or be released, just as we all will.

Baseball can be rough but also enjoyable, much like life.  Within both life and baseball it's important not to forget the early stages of our journey.

In the very few years I have been working as a field reporter for The Storm, I've noticed that the humble athletes seem to get the furthest. Those with knowledge but who are willing to learn and those who bring a deep-seated passion are those that excel. Can't the same can be said about life?

My brother and I were a Petco during the 2013 season getting a baseball signed down by the dugout when one player lit up and came over to talk with us, all due to my Storm Baseball cap. He had fond memories of his time spent at Pete Lehr Field and said that he'll cherish those years forever. His kind words regarding our minor league club have always stuck with me, and they've made me realize that no matter what level of success we achieve we must remember the early years that brought us to that success.

"Swing for your Seats" promotion is now in progress...

The Padres have a promotion going on right now at Petco Park.  It's called "Swing for your Seats".  Each fan gets two 70 mph pitches from a pitching machine and if they have never played D1 or professional baseball and they hit a home run then they win season tickets for 2014.

If they lose, by not hitting a homer then the Padres keep their name, phone number and address and try to sell them season tickets forever! MUAHAHAHA! Let's be honest it's a game that can't be won, but it sure would be fun, at least until the sales calls start coming in faster than the pitches.

I saw some discussion on Twitter between fans talking about their energy packed breakfast that they're hoping will help them punch a ball out of the park.  It's a shame that I can't participate, because I've got all their breakfasts beat.  You know what I had for breakfast?  'Roids.  If I ever had a chance, it'd be this morning.  Although the reason I'm juiced right now is due to crippling back pain, so I'd probably swing really hard, collapse at the plate and die like Roy Hobbs.

I've hit at Petco Park before and even when I made solid contact it was a liner that barely made it out of the infield.  I think there are probably a few fans that could do it but it's going to take a lot of luck and a lot more than 2 pitches.  I doubt too many Padres players could hit one out with just one swing.  We'll see how it goes, no one has done it yet.

Padres release list of 50 finalists for PA position, former broadcaster Mel Proctor among them

Yesterday the Padres released their list of the 50 finalists for the Padres PA position. I can't believe they haven't made more cuts after all this time.  Bud Black is cutting players left and right, day in and day out.  I say let him take control and he'd have this group whittled down by the end of the week.  Instead the Padres have already admitted that they won't have the position filled by Opening Day, which raises an obvious question, will there be any announcements on March 30th?

Padres announce top 50 candidates for public address announcer | padres.com: News

"We had an overwhelming amount of talented candidates try out," said Partello. "After reviewing the auditions multiple times, we decided to extend the timeline to ensure that each candidate is thoroughly evaluated."

A quick glance at the list of 45 men and 5 women who are finalist just looks like any list of names, but there's at least one name you might recognize.  The name of that man is Mel Proctor, the Padres former TV broadcaster who worked the 1998 season, like a boss.  Now that's somebody I could get excited about.  If it were me I'd just give him the job and be done with it.

Instead they're going to have all 50 finalists introduce one batter at the Padres games being played at USD just days before the Home Opener.  That particular test won't prove anything but maybe they're hoping it will weed out out-of-town contestants who refuse to fly in from out of state to jump threw that hoop.

Julio Urias strikes out 2 in Dodgers debut

$

Saturday afternoon marked one of just two Dodgers games this spring not to be televised.

GLENDALE -- Dodgers 17-year-old pitching prospect Julio Urias made his first impression on big league camp in fine fashion on Saturday, pitching a scoreless inning against the Padres at Camelback Ranch, with two strikeouts.

Urias said he found out this morning that he would start the game.

In the first inning, Urias fell behind leadoff man Will Venable but rebounded to strike him out on a fastball. After a ground out by Chris Denorfia, Urias struck out Yonder Alonso on a slider to end the inning. Both punchouts were swinging.

Here is the strikeout of Alonso, courtesy of site member Bobby Bruin:

“I knew nothing of him before he came up but he has a real big league arm, he’s got good stuff,” said Tim Federowicz, his catcher. “I asked him how he likes to work, he’s got a good feel for it already. He throws a good fastball, down in the zone, really good slider, decent change up, he’s got a good mix, throws hard, kind of knows what he is doing.

"That's hard to find in a 17-year old. I don’t know if I would want to face him in A-Ball, he’s got good stuff."

Urias said he didn't know anything about the three batters he faced in the first inning.

Wearing a No. 84 jersey with no name, Urias threw 14 pitches, including nine for strikes.

Signed out of Mexico in 2012, Urias made his professional debut as a 16-year-old in the Midwest League, going 2-0 with a 2.48 ERA in 18 starts with Class-A Great Lakes, with 67 strikeouts and just 16 walks in 54⅓ innings.

The left-hander is listed at 5'11, but said he is now 6'1 and still growing. He hopes to get to 6'3. As a southpaw pitcher from Mexico in the Dodgers organization, the comparisons to Fernando Valenzuela are inevitable. As a reminder of just how long ago Fernandomania was (33 years ago), Urias was asked if his father Carlos - a catcher who played one season in the Mexican League - told him of Valenzuela, the 17-year-old said actually, it was his grandfather who would tell those stories.

Urias was named a top-100 prospect in baseball by Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, ESPN and MLB.com, peaking at No. 14 overall by Keith Law of ESPN.

Urias said he hasn't been told where he will start the season, and said he would probably be allowed to pitch maybe 30 more innings than he did in 2013.

"I feel prepared and ready to pitch in the major leagues," Urias said. "The goal is to finish [2014] in the big leagues, but if I can't do that at least get to Double-A."

Dodgers 5, Padres 4: Late rally isn't enough for the Padres to overcome Wieland's struggles

$

Joe Wieland is shaky in his first start of 2014.

Our Padres battled back from an early deficit against the Dodgers on Saturday afternoon, but their rally came up a little short. Joe Weiland made his third appearance, but first start, of the Spring, and had some trouble finding his command. His struggles started right away, as he allowed a leadoff triple, RBI groundout, single (and stolen base), RBI single, and a walk before finally collecting the last two outs to end the 1st inning.

The trouble continued in the bottom of the 3rd after Adrian Gonzalez whiffed to lead off the frame. Wieland issued back-to-back walks followed by back-to-back singles and then another walk to bring home two more Dodgers runs. At that point, Jesse Hahn came in to relieve the starter, but a sac fly brought home a third run (credited to Wieland) before Hahn could get out of the inning.

Hahn pitched two more innings, both scoreless, after that. Then Kevin Quackenbush, Dale Thayer, and Alex Torres combined for three scoreless, allowing only one hit between them.

The Friars offense was kept off the board until the 8th inning when Alex Castellanos hit a leadoff homer. But that was just the beginning of the late-inning rally attempt. Tommy Medica singled, advanced to second on a walk by Cody Decker, and came home when Daniel Robertson hit a ground-rule double. Austin Hedges and Alexi Amarista added RBI singles to make it a one-run game. The Padres eventually had the bases loaded with two outs, but the same man who started it all (Castellanos) brought it to an end when he struck out swinging. The Friars failed to put up anymore fight in the 9th, going down in order to secure the victory for L.A.

03/16 Padres Preview: ST Game 19 vs. Royals

The Padres will send righty Ian Kennedy to the hill to face Royals southpaw Jason Vargas.

Ian Kennedy struggled early his last time out, but today he'll try to get back on track, making his fourth Spring start when the Padres host the Royals in Peoria. The right-hander gave up four runs total in four innings of work, but three of those runs came home in the first inning. Altogether this Spring, he's allowed six runs, but has only allowed one walk while racking up six strikeouts.

Taking the mound opposite Kennedy will be Kansas City's projected no. 2 starter, Jason Vargas. The southpaw has only allowed one run, on 10 hits and a walk, through nine innings this Spring.

What Do You Want to Ask Members of the Lake Elsinore Storm?

Let me know what you want the hear from the Storm.

The San Diego Padres organization is brimming with talent, and it is my privilege to chat with many of our freshly drafted athletes to get a better sense of who they are and what makes them tick.

As the 2014 season grows closer I grow more curious as to what the fans want to know about our boys. In interviews we run the gamut from dissecting a play that just occurred to minutia such as favorite baseball films. I'm always interested as to what inspires them to do what they do, but I want to know what you are interested in knowing about our future Padres.

The Lake Elsinore Storm host Major League rehabilitation assignments, newly signed free agents and minor league baseball players that have progressed or regressed within the organization. Additionally, the Storm's new manager is Jamie Quirk, who spent parts of 18 years in the big leagues and earned a ring with the 1985 Royals. The possibilities for questions are endless, but instead of just discussing what I feel is important with our boys, I want to know what you want to know.

There will be many video interviews posted to Gaslamp Ball this season with much of our young talent, so let me know what you're interested in asking, so I can get the info you want to hear.

Examining the Yankees' backup options at second base

$

What are the backup options at second base once Brian Roberts gets hurt?

The Yankees had to try their best to come up with some sort of replacement at second base once Robinson Cano dashed to the Pacific Northwest. First, the team wisely turned down a Brett Gardner-for-Brandon Phillips swap, then passed on giving Omar Infante a four-year contract, and finally watched Mark Ellis sign with the Cardinals. Once the dust settled, New York found themselves with Brian Roberts as their new everyday second baseman. Well, at least that's the plan right now. Brian Roberts is sure to get hurt sometime, thus testing New York's depth at the second base position.

Fortunately, along with the Roberts signing, the Yankees brought in a few players through trade and free agency to help shore up their second base depth, starting with Dean Anna. Anna was acquired in a trade with the Padres, in which the Yankees sent Low-A reliever Ben Paullus to San Diego. I have no idea what Paullus will ever amount to, but on the surface, it appears as though New York got the best of this minor trade. Anna can play all three non-first base infield positions, but is mainly a second baseman and shortstop, where he is known as a quality defender. Anna has also shown very good on-base skills, as evident by his minor-league-career .386 OBP and 12.5% walk-rate. Anna will surely start the year in Scranton, but once Roberts gets hurt, the "Dean of Swing" could get his first taste of the big leagues.

After acquiring Anna, the Yankees signed Scott Sizemore off the scrap-heap to a minor-league deal. Sizemore tore his ACL twice in each of the last two seasons and is currently trying to make his way back as a utility man for the Yankees. I personally wouldn't be surprised one bit if Sizemore ends up being Kelly Johnson's platoon partner at third base come Opening Day, but, at the same time, he could very well be sent to Triple-A to help make up for lost time. In addition to third base, Sizemore can play second base, and, barring further injury, could certainly be a Roberts backup plan at second.

In between the Anna and Sizemore acquisitions was another scrap-heap pickup in Yangervis Solarte. Solarte, a career minor leaguer, has taken the Grapefruit League by storm, hitting .517/.563/.724 through two weeks' worth of games. He is versatile, seeing time mainly at second (his most primary position) and third, with stops at left field, shortstop, and right field. "Versatile" can mean two different things, however; he can be versatile in that he can play well at multiple positions, or he can be versatile in that he's pretty bad wherever he plays, so teams just move him around when a better player comes around. I'm thinking Solarte's more of the latter than he is the former.

Anyway, since his primary position is second, Solarte could be given a chance in the Bronx once Roberts gets hurt, assuming all else fails. The smart money, however, is Solarte getting sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he'll most likely repeat his past Triple-A performances (~91 wRC+ in 263 career Triple-A games) and never be heard from again.

In terms of in-house solutions at second, there's Eduardo Nunez and Brendan Ryan. We all know the story with Nunez by now: almost everyone hates him as a player, yet he continues to get chance after chance. Nunez might end up being Kelly Johnson's platoon partner at third come Opening Day, partly because he's hit well this spring (.285/.310/.500). Once Roberts gets hurt, Nunez could slide over to second base full-time in what'd surely create a disaster outcome. (Johnson could also move to his normal position at second with Nunez moving to third, not that the thought of Nunez at third is much more comforting.) Ryan, on the other hand, is set to be Derek Jeter's caddie at shortstop, but could see time at second if need be.

How about in-house options at the minor league level? Well, there just isn't that much, unfortunately. There's Jose Pirela, who has some shiny stats at the Double-A level over the last two seasons (123 wRC+, 118 wRC+ in 2012 and 2013, respectively), but it took him three seasons to finally advance to the next minor-league level. There's also Corban Joseph, who has hit pretty well almost wherever he's been in the minors, but he's coming off of shoulder surgery. He also has had plenty of trouble at second base, to the point where he's seen most of his time at first base this spring and may have to settle there long-term.

Sadly, the respective Brian Roberts backup plans aren't that attractive at all. Even the two more intriguing options, Anna and Sizemore, certainly don't come without their faults. The Yankees could always turn to the trade market if need be, but of course it takes two (or sometimes three) to tango. The second base situation is basically a ticking-time bomb this year, given Roberts' recent health history and the so-so backup options that follow him. For now, the Yankees will just have to cross their fingers and hope for the best; it's all they can do until something unexpectedly goes right.

Birthday Cards: Tim Lollar, Professional Hitter

$

Never mind all of Tim Lollar's work on the mound for a second; the man could swing a mean shillelagh. Lollar spent four years in San Diego, and went deep in each of them. In fact, Lollar had at least one of every type of extra-base hit each of his last three seasons in brown. The doubles and homers I can see, because every generation there are a couple of pitchers who can run into one, but those triples? A lot of great position players go full seasons without a three-bagger, so for a pitcher to do it once is impressive enough, let alone three years in a row.

Lollar came to the Padres in a trade with the Yankees before the 1981 season. He was used in a swingman role that season, which limited his at-bats. Of course, it also limited his innings and that was a good thing because he got lit up that year. He moved to the rotation in 1982 and stayed there through the team's 1984 World Series run. After that season he was sent to the White Sox in the LaMarr Hoyt trade.

In addition to being a threat with the bat, Lollar was also flawless with the leather. He made one error in his first season with the team, and that was the end of that. Lollar led the National League with a perfect fielding percentage each of his remaining three seasons.

Happy fifty-seventh birthday to Tim Lollar. I hope it's a real *sigh* home run.

Tyson Ross takes on the division rival Rockies this afternoon in Peoria.

The Padres will welcome NL West rival Rockies to Peoria Sports Complex this afternoon. They'll give the ball to Tyson Ross for the start. Prior to his last appearance, Ross hadn't allowed a hit or any runs to cross the plate all Spring. But the Indians got the better of him last Wednesday, tagging him for three runs in 3 1/3 innings of work, his longest outing of the preseason. Ross has pitched a total of 8 1/3 innings in his previous three starts racking up six strikeouts altogether. Corey Brock tells us we should expect to see him throw around 70-80 pitches this afternoon as he focuses on his slider against Colorado.

The Rockies will send Brett Anderson to the mound opposite Ross. They acquired Anderson from the Athletics in the offseason and so far he's proven to be a good acquisition. This Spring he's thrown ten innings, collecting five strikeouts while only walking one, and has kept opponents to two runs.

Joe Wieland to have an MRI today to diagnose sore elbow

Jeff Passan tweeted last night that, Padres pitcher, Joe Wieland is suffering from a sore elbow.   Tommy John surgery rehab kept Wieland out of the rotation for all of the 2013 season.

Report: Wieland headed for MRI on elbow | UTSanDiego.com

Wieland has allowed nine runs on 14 hits and six walks in seven innings in Cactus League action.

Although Padres fans know Passan as the deliverer of doomsday scenarios, his tweeted worst case scenario of another torn UCL for Wieland doesn't sound as far fetched.  Especially since the very problem arose recently with his teammate.  It was determined in February that the insides of Cory Luebke's elbow turned to a yellow mush after his first Tommy John Surgery didn't take.

Losing Wieland for at least another season to surgery would be a crushing blow for Wieland and would undoubtedly be a source of major concern for the Padres and their medical staff.

Joe Wieland's arm soreness located in tricep, not ligament

Ah good news!  Jeff Passan's worst case scenario of a torn UCL diagnoses for Joe Wieland doesn't seem likely anymore.  Padres beat writer Corey Brock passed along information directly from manager Bud Black about the exact location of Wieland's soreness.

Apparently Wieland has had tricep soreness in the past and the pain it is not a result of a torn ligament.  That means a second Tommy John surgery will not be necessary.  I don't know about you but I just let out a big sigh of relief.

Rockies vs. Padres spring training preview: Troy Tulowitzki back in the lineup

$
0
0

It's been a while since the Rockies have won a Cactus League game, but perhaps the return of their star shortstop will help -- not that it really matters.

The 8-10-3 Rockies travel to Peoria to face the 6-10 Padres on Monday behind starting pitcher Brett Anderson and a healthy Troy Tulowitzki.

The Rockies have not won in six games, losing three consecutive contests before playing three straight games that resulted in a tie. Tulowitzki hasn't been on the field for any of those after getting hit by a pitch in a game against the Diamondbacks last week. However, the time he has missed has been strictly precautionary, and it should be business as usual for Tulo today. Tulowitzki has a .389 on-base percentage and has slugged .769 with a pair of homers in 18 plate appearances thus far.

Meanwhile, Anderson, who was the Rockies' first starter to reach the five-inning threshold, will perhaps garner a greater workload against the division rival Friars today. No Rockies starter has gone more than five, but Anderson could be the first today, depending on how efficient he is with his pitches. Anderson boasts a 1.80 ERA this spring with five strikeouts in a walk in 10 innings of work.

Tyson Ross will be on the hill for the Padres facing a Rockies lineup that is short three or four projected regulars. Ross has struggled a bit with his control this spring, issuing six free passes (while also striking out six batters) in 8⅓ innings.

2014 Rockies Spring Training Game No. 22: Brett Anderson vs. Tyson Ross

Rockies 9, Padres 7: Josh Rutledge, Jason Pridie key Colorado win

$
0
0

The Rockies had their sticks working on Monday, particularly in a five-run fourth inning dominated by doubles.

Josh Rutledge had three hits including a double and a home run and Jason Pridie went 4-for-4 with a walk as the Rockies beat the Padres, 9-7, to secure their first win in their last seven games.

The Rockies tagged Padres starter Tyson Ross for six runs on 12 hits in 4⅓ innings, despite striking out six times. Most of the damage was done in the fourth, when Colorado strung together four consecutive doubles--and five in the frame overall--en route to plating five runs. The Padres countered with five runs over the next two innings off of Brett Anderson, although only three were earned because of a two-out error by Troy Tulowitzki followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Xavier Nady.

Anderson wasn't at his best, falling behind 3-0 on several occasions, but he utilized his heavy sinker to induce grounders in a few of those situations and wound up lasting six innings. Anderson allowed eight hits but did not issue a walk and struck out four. The also had an infield single and a sacrifice bunt in three plate appearances. The hit was the first of Anderson's pro career, he told MLB.com's Thomas Harding after the game.

Tulowitzki had a rough day in his first action since being hit by a pitch last week. In addition to the error, Tulo went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a GIDP at the plate.

But there were far more positives than negatives for the Rockies on this day. Carlos Gonzalez had a couple of hits, as did Justin Morneau, who seems to have benefited from getting some work in against minor leaguers on Sunday. Tim Wheeler added a home run in the ninth inning for his second dinger of the spring, tying Rutledge and Tulowitzki for the team lead.

Chris Martin had a hiccup in the ninth inning, allowing a pair of runs on three hits, but the other components of the Rockies' bullpen were solid. Chad Bettis struck out a batter in a perfect seventh inning and Tommy Kahnle following with a clean eighth.

Rockies 9, Padres 7: Peoria Plays Like Coors

$

Despite what the final score might imply, today's game was not actually played on the moon.

Boy, did Tyson Ross get roughed up today. In his 4.1 innings of work, he gave up 6 runs on 12 hits. Five of those runs came during a brutal fourth inning, where he served four doubles in a row before recording a single out. The upshot of Ross's start? He also recorded 6 strikeouts without allowing a single walk. Rockies starter Brett Anderson didn't fare a whole lot better, as the Padres hit him for 5 runs (3 earned) in his 6 innings of work. Xavier Nady hit a two-run homer so deep into left field that it nearly reached the All-You-Can-Eat Tent on the concourse. Then, with Alex Castellanos and Nick Hundley on base, Everth Cabrera roped one into right field, stretching it into a triple. So, shaky pitching and impressive offense should be today's story, but they're eclipsed by something that happened before the first pitch: Carlos Quentin was scratched from the lineup. There's still no word on why he didn't start in left field as planned, and in this case, no news is probably not good news. Keep your fingers crossed, folks.
