Despite a solid outing by Nathan Eovaldi, the Miami Marlins fell to Ian Kennedy and the visiting San Diego Padres 4-2 in the final game of a three game series on Sunday afternoon.
In what turned out to be a pitching duel between Eovaldi and Kennedy, the Marlins' lineup struggled to score runs and left men in scoring position (1-5).
Miami was able to get on the board in the fourth after left fielder Christian Yelich opened the inning with a triple to right center field. Yelich was driven in by Giancarlo Stanton, who dumped an inside fastball into left field for an RBI-single.
Eovaldi had command of all of his pitches early, and was hitting 97/98 mph on his fastball consistently. His offspeed pitches, at some points, struggled to find the strike zone.
With one out in the seventh inning, Will Venable and Tommy Medica singled, and after Eovaldi recorded an out, Alexi Amarista hit a three run pinch-hit home run to right field that gave the Padres a quick 3-1 advantage.
In his seven innings, Eovaldi gave up three runs and struck out eight while not walking a batter.
Jarrod Saltalanmacchia scored on a two-out RBI double off the bat of Jeff Baker which made it a one run game, but Yonder Alonso hit a sac fly to left against Dan Jennings in the eighth to make it a 4-2 contest.
Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning, but the Marlins couldn't rally against San Diego closer Huston Street and lost their second game of the season.
Miami has an off day Monday before playing the Nationals and Phillies, respectively.
