Diamondbacks 4, Padres 3: Missed It By That Much

The Padres almost pulled out a win tonight, but the bats woke up just a little too late. Brandon McCarthy held the Friar offense to just 3 hits and a walk in his 7 innings of work while Ian Kennedy allowed 3 runs on a whopping 11 hits in 5 innings, including a solo shot off the bat of Miguel Montero. Kennedy's outing would have been even worse had Cameron Maybin not robbed a home run from Paul Goldschmidt. Trailing 4-0 going into the ninth, there shouldn't have been any excitement left, but that's when the offense finally showed up.

After Chris Denorfia grounded out to lead off the ninth, Seth Smith got things going with a single to third. Yasmani Grandal finally got the Padres on the board with a double to center. Nervous for the first time this series, Kirk Gibson pulled J.J. Putz and replaced him with Addison Reed. That didn't work out so well. Jedd Gyorko took him deep to left center to pull the Pads to within one. Yonder Alonso finally provided the snakes with their second out, but Maybin got things going again with a line drive double to left. Will Venable walked to put the winning run on base, but Xavier Nady flew out to right to end the game.

Tyson Ross will try to prevent the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 PM. Here's to Sunday Runday!
