SAN DIEGO -- The Padres rallied for a run off Kevin Correia in the 12th inning, with Yasmani Grandal delivering the walk-off single giving San Diego a 3-2 win over the Dodgers on Friday night at Petco Park.

Alexi Amarista started the winning rally for the Padres in the 12th, with a leadoff single. One out later a walk to Yangervis Solarte, a wild pitch by Correia and another walk, to Abraham Almonte, set up Seth Smith with the bases loaded.

The Dodgers set up the shiftiest infield shift of all time, with four infielders between first and second base for the left-handed Smith:

... and it worked! Sort of. Smith grounded to Dee Gordon, who threw home wildly for the second out of the inning, but Smith beat the throw to first, extending the inning for Grandal.

Tim Stauffer, who like Correia was an Opening Day starter in 2011, pitched a scoreless top of the 12th for the win.

The Dodgers fell to 5-9 in extra innings this season, including 2-3 on the road, and coupled with San Francisco's win the Dodgers saw their lead in the National League West shrink to 3½ games.

The Padres have beaten the Dodgers in the opening game of a series in San Diego eight straight times, but have won none of the previous seven series.

Hanley Ramirez provide the bulk of the Dodgers offense in regulation, driving in both runs, including a game-tying home run in the eighth. The home run was hit two innings after Ramirez injured his left ankle rounding first base.

Though the Dodgers fell to 1-48 when trailing after seven innings, Friday was the third such game this season that they have forced extra innings only to lose.

Dan Haren threw a lot of pitches early but was able to last through six innings. The two runs he allowed were a pair of opportunistic strikes by San Diego.

In the second inning after Grandal walked to open the frame, Jedd Gyorko hit a double play grounder to second base, only to have Gordon turn and throw nowhere near second base, into left field allowing runners to reach second and third. Haren did well in limiting the damage to just one run, a sacrifice fly by Rene Rivera.

Haren retired seven of his next eight batters faced, including the first two batters of the fourth inning. But three consecutive two-out hits by San Diego, the last by Alexi Amarista to center field — where Andre Ethier's bobble removed any chance of preventing the run — gave the Padres a 2-1 advantage.

The Dodgers scored their run with a two-out hit of their own in the third, when Ramirez doubled to right field to tie the score at 1-1. But the team couldn't cash in the ensuing situation, with runners on second and third with two outs, for any more runs.

In the fifth the Dodgers threatened thanks to a leadoff double by Justin Turner, one of his three hits on the night, and he advanced to third base with one out. But after Dan Haren struck out, Gordon drove a ball to one of the deepest parts of Petco Park - in right center field - where right fielder Rymer Liriano made a leaping catch to rob Gordon of extra bases and the Dodgers of a run.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner allowed just the one run in six innings, striking out eight with no walks. In his career against the Dodgers the right-hander has a 1.37 ERA in 46 innings, covering five starts and 11 relief appearances. But he has no wins against them.
