The Padres and Giants offenses struggled again tonight as they fought for fourth place in the NL West. The teams combined for just 18 hits and 5 runs while striking out 18 times. So how do you win a tight game? Good pitching and some clutch hitting. Rookie Robbie Erlin provided both, picking up both his first major league hit and RBI in one swing.
The game was scoreless through four and a half innings, and it looked like it might stay that way when Kyle Blanks was standing on second with two out. Nick Hundley had other plans, putting the Padres on the board with a double deep to center field.
Madison Bumgarner walked Ronny Cedeño to get to Erlin because he's scared of Ronny but not Robbie. Mistake.

Unfortunately, he got pulled in the sixth after giving up a pair of runs. Tim Stauffer put in a solid 1.2 innings, striking out 3 and only giving up a pair of hits. With things still knotted in the bottom of the seventh, Hundley drew a walk before moving to third on a single from Cedeño. That's when Chris Denorfia broke out the old Tony Gwynn Special, a single through the 5.5 hole.
Luke Gregerson and Huston Street put together scoreless innings to take the series for the Padres. Eric Stults goes for the sweep against Tim Lincecum at 3:40 PM tomorrow afternoon.
