Padres 4, Rockies 3: Breweries And Bats Show Up At Petco

I'll be honest, I went to this game for Beerfest. A bunch of five dollar beers from local breweries, and there's baseball? That sounds like a great Friday night. But the way the Padres have played against the Rockies this season combined with Burch Smith's shaky major league track record didn't have me looking forward to a great game. I should have trusted in my team.

Smith didn't look like he was going to last long. He gave up three hits to start the game: a double to Dexter Fowler, a single to D.J. LeMahieu, and another double to Troy Tulowitzki. Fowler and LeMahieu would score before the inning was over. That was all he would allow through his five innings. He got into a couple jams in the third and the fifth, but did a great job getting out of them, recording seven strikeouts while only giving up four hits and four walks. Most importantly though, his offense had his back.

Will Venable led off the first with a home run to the Jack Deck in right field. Chris Denorfia followed that up with a triple to left, but the next three batters couldn't bring him in. He made up for it in the sixth inning, though. After drawing a leadoff walk, Deno got a great jump on a routine grounder to second off the bat of Jedd Gyorko. He saw a chance to take third and went for it. That's when Todd Helton threw the ball away. Tie game.

Things were knotted at two when Huston Street took the mound in the ninth. He put down three Rockies in a row. Unfortunately, he did after Helton drilled the ball to deep center field. That would have been a terrible way to lose the game, but Chase Headley had plans of his own, hitting a leadoff blast to left in the bottom of the inning. Then Kyle Blanks drew a walk. Alexi Amarista kept the rally going with a bunt single. Ronny Cedeño moved the runners over with a perfect sacrifice bunt. With one out, Nick Hundley was given a free pass to set up a double play. The Rockies weren't so lucky, as pinch hitter Jesus Guzman hit a screaming grounder down the third base line for a walkoff single.

Tyson Ross will try to keep the magic going against Tyler Chatwood at 5:40 PM tomorrow.
