Padres Battle Back, Troll Tribe 4-4

$

0

Ties are no fun, but they're better than losing.

Josh Johnson showed some delayed Spring rust today, failing to ride the momentum from his first start.  Although he gave up three runs in the first, JoJo settled down nicely and flashed his excellent offerings to hitters (Josh Johnson is not a flasher).  The big right-hander managed to whiff three Indians after settling down.  In relief, Adys Portillo, Kevin Quackenbush, and Nick Vincent all tossed scoreless innings and made Cleveland hitters look bad - with Portillo needing just 9 pitches to retire the side.

Padres hitters struggled for long stretches, but managed to battle back from an early deficit.  On the prospect side of things, Austin Hedges, Cory Spangenberg, and Reymond Fuentes had rough afternoons, but Rymer Liriano slugged an impressive double.  New acquisition Ryan Jackson earned major hustle points with a triple and a pair of sacrifices (CAN YOU SAY "GAMER?").  On the whole, the team failed to cash in on opportunities, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving 9 men on base.  On-the-bubble players Jonathan Galvez and Tommy Medica continued their impressive springs and will look to force their way onto the team.  THESE GUYS ARE HUNGRY.

So the Padres didn't win, but they showed HEART - and it's still spring -  IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE SCORE WAS.

Birthday Card: Ed Acosta turns 69 or 70

I check Baseball-Reference just about every day to see which, if any, Padres were born on that date. Along with Benito Santiago, Justin Leone, and John Curtis, Ed Acosta will be blowing out candles today. Exactly how many candles, I'm not certain. You see, B-R has his birthday as March 9, 1944, but the one baseball card I have of him has the year listed as 1945.

00q_medium

It seems like a cut-and-dry case of a ballplayer shaving a year off his age; in Jim Bouton's groundbreaking book Ball Four, he described the practice as being prevalent at the time. I did a little research, but couldn't find any mention of Acosta getting busted for falsifying his age. That could be due to forty years passing and Ed not being quite as high-profile as a Miguel Tejada (nee Tejeda) or Roberto Hernandez (f.k.a. Fausto Carmona), but more likely he just corrected it after his career was over and it was a moot point.

Andrew Cashner Answers Fans' Questions On Padres' Official Twitter Account

During Saturday's tie versus the Indians, the Padres' social media people kept fans engaged on Twitter by having Andrew Cashner answer fan-submitted questions from the dugout. He answered a wide array of questions, and not just about baseball.

As you'd expect, he got a lot of questions about hunting.

Oh my goodness, that needs to be a reality show.

How humble of him. There were a number of other hunting-related replies, but one in particular was reassuring for Padres fans:

In addition to questions about shooting stuff, Cash took on some random topics including his mullet, favorite movie, and home state.

Is that the sequel to 7 Seconds with Wesley Snipes? No? Bullriding? Whoa, that sounds even worse than I was imagining.

Hey, mine too! THAT'S MY PURSE! I DON'T KNOW YOU!

In addition to all that whimsy, Cashner weighed in on baseball-related matters.

I wonder if Alexi would be able to shoot ducks while riding piggyback?

That seems like a good spot to wrap up this round-up. It was a lot of good, clean fun for everyone involved, and the Padres should totally do that again.

100%.

03/09 Padres Preview: ST Game 12 @ Diamondbacks

Our Padres are back on the road today to take on the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. Eric Stults looks to get back on track in his third Spring Training start. After allowing three runs in each of his previous two starts, the most recent of which was also against Arizona.

Meanwhile, Bo Schultz hopes to make a good impression as the starter for the Dbacks. He'll be followed by David Hernandez, Josh Collmenter, Addison Reed, and Brad Ziegler, who are all looking to be major players in Arizona's bullpen this season.

Game time for today is set for 1:10pm and will be televised on Fox Sports San Diego.

Diamondbacks 2, Padres 2: Didn't win, didn't lose, had a lot of fun

You know what the worst thing about attending a spring training game is? It's coming home, and the wait to discover the location of the fragment of flesh which missed out on the sunblock. Earlobe? Ankle? Forehead. There's always one...

Record: 7-6-2. Change on 2013: +1.5.

The first baseball game of the year for us, as Mrs. SnakePit and I joined a select group of 12,464 of our closest friends at Salt River Fields, and watched the Diamondbacks and Padres play their way to our second tie of the pre-season. We arrived earlier than expected, but that meant we got to select some prime real-estate near the bottom of the berm in right-field. Of  course, keeping the space around us free for later arrivals was a different matter. Next time, I think we'll bring some fake dog poop we can scatter around us to help in this task. Or, hell, squeeze the SnakePup gently and use the real thing. Spring training is serious business.

The socos were next to arrive, including mrssoco who is two weeks from popping out a socoette, and reported that at Salt River Fields, for the valet parking, you have to pay $5 for the privilege of driving up to the valet - than another $15 for that. Not impressed. They were followed by a flurry of other arrivals, and by the middle of the first inning, we had everyone in place. SnakePit Rollcall? Myself, Mrs. SnakePit, soco, mrssoco, kishi, mrskishi, asteroid, mrasteroid, their friend Alan, edbigghead, edbigghead Jr and Turambar, all slotted in to the available space.

The game started off with an easy fly ball to right center, which our Gold Glove outfielder, Gerardo Parra, ranged over to snare for the first ou... Whoops, my mistake: it clanked off his glove - insert "two hands!" comment here - for a two-base error. Not quite the way we wanted things to start, and the runner came across the plate on a one-out single. However, that was all that starter Bo Schultz would allow in his three innings of work, and from what we could see (mostly Padres going back to the dugout), he looked pretty good. He allowed three hits and no walks, with three strikeouts, and definitely seems to have improved his stock in spring training.

With one out in the bottom half, we got to see our first review, after a hard smash by Paul Goldschmidt was bobbled by the first baseman, and a footrace to the bag ended with Goldie being called out. Gibson went out, discussed the play, and then the review process unfolded  The play stood as called, but it did seem to take longer than I'd have expected for the decision to be made - reviewing the tape just now, looks like it was approaching three minutes, from the point where Gibson finished his discussion, to the point where the umpire confirmed the decision. Given the goal is one minute, fifteen seconds, they've got some improvement to do.

The Diamondbacks took the lead with some two-out magic in the second inning. Tuffy Gosewisch got the rally started with a double, and Schultz then kept things goings with a fly-ball single to right field, though Tuffy had to stop at third. It didn't matter, as A.J. Pollock then clattered one over the heads of the Colorado outfielders' to the wall in right center, scoring both runners. That was the end of the scoring here for quite some time, as we saw 10 consecutive zeroes. David Hernandez, Josh Collmenter and Ryan Rowland-Smith combined for four scoreless innings for us, with the last named working a perfect seventh.

However, Brad Ziegler blew the save in the eighth, giving up hard hit line drives to the first two batters he faced, to allow the Padres to tie things up, though he was then able to wriggle out of the jam created, with the go-ahead run on second and nobody out. Addison Reed looked impressive in the ninth, retiring two of the three hitters he faced by the strikeout (albeit no-one I've heard of!), and Evan Marshall worked a 1-2-3 tenth. We threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting two men on with one out, in part thanks to a call of catcher interference, but came up empty, and couldn't take advantage of a two out error in the tenth, Chris Owings striking out to end the game.

We only managed a total of six hits and a walk, with Eric Chavez reaching twice, on a hit and that solitary base on balls. Owings was also caught stealing, though it's perhaps notable or significant, that he was the only starter to play the entire game, going 1-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts. The team is at Salt River Fields again tomorrow, with an evening game against the Seattle Mariners. Patrick Corbin will take the mound, in his penultimate start before the team departs for Australia, a week from today.

And don't forget, the SnakePit Round Table gets under way in a couple of hours, at 8pm Arizona time. Which is now 8pm Pacific time, thanks to the clocks changing...

Padres Play Ten Again, Tie Diamondbacks This Time

One day after playing to a 4-4 draw against the Indians, San Diego tied the Diamondbacks at twos. Eric Stults allowed five hits and both Arizona runs, and five relievers combined for six and two-thirds innings of one-hit baseball. On the offensive side, Seth Smith had a pair of hits, and Jedd Gyorko and Alex Dickerson each drove in a run.

Of the five pitchers who followed Stults, only Tim Stauffer allowed a hit. Donn Roach stayed in for two and two-thirds innings, then Alex Torres, Joaquin Benoit, Stauffer, and Dennis O`Grady each put in an inning of work apiece. Benoit was especially impressive, striking out the side.

Spring Training superstar Tommy Medica went 1-2 to lower his batting average to .520. He also walked and stole his second base of the preseason, just because he can do whatever he wants.

The Padres will be on the road again tomorrow. Their ten-inning tie against the Rockies will begin at 1:10 pm.

The Many GIFs of Scott Feldman

Scott Feldman in all his GIF glory.

Baseball is back! GIFs are back! Sort of.

Spring Training is here and with that comes chaotic scorecards and day games, only a handful of which actually get televised. Which means the opportunities for GIFing plays are very few. I have a fix for your GIF craving though. Another edition of 'The Many GIFs' post. This time we're going to focus on the 'meh' signing, Scott Feldman, who got three years and 30 million dollars from the Astros. He has to be something right, right?

Scott Feldman the groundballer

This is the first thing that people notice when looking at Feldman's statistics. He gets groundballs at an above average rate.

I love the reaction of the batter, "not another groundball!"

That's a lot of groundballs. One thing a groundball pitcher has to be good at is covering first base, as highlighted in two of the three GIFs above. But what if the ball goes to his left.

Without seeing more of Feldman I can't really tell how good his command is overall, but it looks to be pretty good. Just ask the Padres.

Chase Headley rumors: Padres 'destined' to lose 3B in free agency

$

The Padres have attempted to extend Headley, but since nothing has been decided, the open market "looms."

San Diego isn't Los Angeles.

A lot of people in the city probably like that about their hometown, but for the baseball team, it can be something of a hindrance on the way they do business. They can't throw huge sums of money at their players in order to keep them around. They simply don't have the same contingency as the Dodgers and Angels do in their budget.

Chase Headley is set to become a free agent after the 2014 season, and although the Padres made a "quiet" attempt to extend him this offseason, they do not appear likely to hang on to him for the future.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the two sides are not currently discussing an extension.

Headley, followed up his breakout 2012 season with a somewhat disappointing 2013, finishing the year with just 13 home runs, 50 runs batted in, and an OPS more than 100 points lower than he posted the year before.

In addition to the power numbers Headley put up in 2012, he won the NL Gold Glove at third base and finished fifth in MVP balloting. With that on his resume, he'll likely be able to garner some considerable multiyear deals in free agency next winter, and the Padres could be resigned to recouping a lone draft pick if they extend him the qualifying offer.

San Diego also could attempt to trade Headley, which might be a preferable option for the 29-year-old. If he is moved during the season, he won't be eligible to receive the qualifying offer next November. Although he might not experience the same kind of open market stalemate that Stephen Drew and Ervin Santana have this offseason, he could still benefit financially from remaining untethered to draft compensation. Teams will be more willing to offer him lucrative deals if their investment isn't penalized by the loss of a draft pick.

If San Diego moves on from Headley, they could opt to move Jedd Gyorko to third base, and use Alexi Amarista at second.

First umpire review during Padres game takes less than 3 minutes

I was pleasantly surprised by how little time the two video replays took to complete in yesterday's game against the D-Backs.

Pair of calls upheld by replay in Padres-D-backs game | padres.com: News

"That was a critical part of the game," Black said.

Apparently the first challenge, in which Paul Goldschmidt was called out when Tommy Medica beat him to first base in a bang-bang play, only took 2 minutes 34 seconds.  That seems like a lot of time if you're makin' sweet love, but in a baseball game that's practically no time at all.  It's all relative.

As a TV viewer sitting on my couch, I didn't think it slowed down the pace of the game at all. TV viewers are usually treated to replay after replay on close calls like that one anyway.  Sure, the TV replays usually happen between pitches of the next batter but what is lost in game momentum is more than made up for with the added level of suspense.  Watching all the different views of the play knowing that the call could possibly be overturned is great theater.

Personally I think the umpires got the first call wrong, even with the replay.  It appeared that Goldschmidt was the first to first base.  It would have been nice if the umpires had said definitively whether they think Medica recorded the out or they just didn't have enough information to overturn the original call.

*Medica

It'll be interesting to see if the replay time is an annoyance when I'm actually sitting in the stands, without the benefit of watching the replays.  I somehow doubt it.  I think it'll be very similar to when umpires gathered and discussed their calls in the olden days.

So far so good.

The Padres are coming off their third tie and second extra-inning game of the Spring as they head back to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick today. Andrew Cashner will make third cactus league start and hopes to continue his successful Spring as he and the Friars take on the Rockies. So far Cashner has pitched five scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out five.

Corey Brock and Jesse Agler tell us that Yasmani Grandal will be getting his first appearance of the Spring this afternoon, though Rivera will be the starting catcher for Cashner. Brock adds that Tommy Medica will see some time in the outfield at some point today as well.

Colorado is coming off a 10-1 victory over the Royals and today they'll send Franklin Morales to the hill. The southpaw is also looking to build on an already strong start to his Spring campaign, in which he's allowed just one unearned run while racking up six strikeouts in five innings of work.

You can listen to today's game live on padres.com or MLB At-Bat. First pitch is at 1:10pm.

Rockies vs. Padres spring training preview: Justin Morneau back in the lineup

$
0
0

Is today's lineup the same one we'll see on Opening Day?

The Rockies today will field what looks like their Opening Day lineup, sans the pitcher, against the Padres at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

That includes Justin Morneau, who hasn't played since Colorado's Cactus League opener on Feb. 28 due to a sore neck. Morneau went 0-for-2 with a strikeout against Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin and on Monday will have another chance at another one of the NL West's high-end hurlers in Andrew Cashner.

Cashner posted a 3.09 ERA in 175 innings of work for the Padres in 2013 and was particularly effective after being placed into the starting rotation roughly a month into the season. Opposing him for the Rockies will be Franklin Morales, who has been very good in two spring training appearances, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out six batters and walking two.

The only real question about this lineup compared to what we might see on Opening Day is whether or not Charlie Blackmon, who will lead off and play center field today, will be able to unseat Drew Stubbs for that role. A big day against an upper-echelon starter certainly couldn't hurt Blackmon in his quest to do that.

Should be an exciting one today with Cashner on the hill and Grandal expected to see some time behind the plate. We'll also see Tommy Medica patrolling the outfield and trying to improve on his already impressive .520 Spring batting average. Neither Grandal nor Medica are in the starting lineup, but they'll be entering the game at some point.

Padres Byrnes says Cashner was a late bloomer but is starting to find his man-strength

$

0

Josh Byrnes interview with Coach Kentera (MP3)

  • Andrew Cashner has picked up right where he left off last year.  He's throwing a lot of pitches for strikes and getting weak contact out of the hitters.  Byrnes also thinks he should win the Gold Glove, "he's an unbelievable fielding pitcher".  Byrnes says coaches have to keep an eye on Cashner to make sure he doesn't over do it.  "There's a lot of little kid in Cash."  Byrnes says Cashner was a late bloomer physically and he's starting to get some "man-strength".
  • "There's a lot of little kid in Cash." -Josh Byrnes
  • Yasmani Grandal will probably catch 3 or 4 innings today.  It'll be his first time playing since his injury.  Byrnes says it's possible he starts on Opening Day but he needs to get some at bats first.  It might be tough to carry him and expect him catch 4 or 5 games a week.  It doesn't seem realistic at this point.  There's a small chance the Padres might carry 3 catchers.
  • Austin Hedges looks great.  He looks like a big leaguer defensively.  He's starting to pick up the craft by matching pitcher's strengths with hitter's weaknesses.  "He swung the bat okay.  I still think he's going to be a good hitter, but clearly the defense it a little bit ahead of his offense."  He'll probably start in AA and finish the year in AAA.  He needs more development this year.
  • The Padres claimed OF Alex Castellanos off waivers from the Texas Rangers.  Byrnes likes Castellanos versatility, he's played 5 positions professionally.  He's got power, speed and a lot of AAA experience.  He's still got an option left, so he'll probably see some big league time this year.
  • Byrnes thinks that Rico Noel is the Padres best defensive center fielder, better than Cameron Maybin.  Byrnes thinks it's possible that Noel could make the ball club, it depends if Buddy thinks he'll use him.  Noel is not currently on the 40 man roster.
  • Donn Roach has thrown well in his two major league Spring Training, but has had setbacks during the seasons.  "He's in the mix too, he's on the 40 man roster."
  • Chase Headley has made slow steady progress with his calf injury.  He probably needs to play a week or 10 days worth of games ideally.  They're not going to push him to come back early.
  • Byrnes has some concern due Max Fried's arm injury.  Fried feels a lot better, he'll probably start throwing in a week or so.  He's responded well to rest and rehab.  Fried says he feels great.
  • Tommy Medica can really hit.  He's had an interesting career with the shoulder injury right out of the shoot.  Byrnes hopes he can figure out a way to get his bat in the line up.
  • Alex Dickerson was a little nervous at first playing for the hometown team.  They're moving him around defensively. He's a big strong left handed hitter with a lot of power.
  • Alex Torres looked pretty good yesterday after his poor performance in his first outing.  He threw really hard and was really sharp.  He was using his secondary pitches really well.
  • Byrnes and A.J. Hinch spend a lot of time in Bud Black's office going over players.  "Were not in a hurry to make decision quite yet."
  • Joaquin Benoit looks like he's ready to go right now. He's got a quality fastball that he can locate and a devastating change-up.

Padres 5, Rockies 0: Franklin Morales has trouble locating in 1st poor outing of spring

$

Rockies fall after Morales' poor second inning, offense's lack of hitting with RISP.

Franklin Morales showed up to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick today.

That's neither a good thing or a bad thing, it just is what it is. Morales, who has always shown flashes of brilliance mixed with frustratingly inconsistent command, did just that again on Monday in the Rockies' 5-0 loss to the Padres in Cactus League action.

Morales, who entered the game having thrown five scoreless innings with six strikeouts across two starts, retired the first five batters of the game before surrendering four consecutive hits in San Diego's three-run second inning. The first three of those were extra-base hits, including a two-run homer off the bat of utility infielder Ryan Jackson. Morales also uncorked a wild pitch during the Padres' two-out rally, allowing the third run to score.

Morales ultimately lasted only 2⅓ innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three.

The good news, aside from the fact that Morales did not issue a walk, is that the bullpen pitched pretty well. Greg Burke immediately induced a double-play grounder to get Morales and the Rockies off the hook in the third, and Tommy Kahnle, Tyler Matzek, Matt Belisle and Wilton Lopez each turned in a scoreless inning of impressive work to follow.

Brooks Brown allowed a pair of runs on three doubles in the eighth before Yohan Flande's scoreless ninth.

The Rockies' offense managed to rack up nine hits, four of which were doubles, but went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Nolan Arenado provided two of those two-baggers while Carlos Gonzalez added a pair of hits including a double, but Troy Tulowitzki grounded out three times with RISP. Michael Cuddyer and Wilin Rosario both went 0-for-3, as well, while Justin Morneau went hitless in two plate appearances in his return to the lineup.

The 2014 Polar Plunge was a success, and we couldn't do it without your support!

Saturday afternoon's 2014 Polar Plunge was a success and for that we thank you!

The Lake Elsinore Storm staff plunged into the frigid water of Big Bear Lake on Saturday afternoon to raise funds for the Special Olympics. The team had a total goal of $2,000 and surpassed it with $2,335 and we have YOU to thank!

And as promised, with your gracious donation here is the soaking wet evidence! The video taken from the entire day of activities will soon follow, but for now enjoy the photographic evidence from Saturdays plunge.

Our colorful characters included Thunder, Iron Man, The Banana, Red-Man, Frau, Sponge Bob and Bat-Girl (yours truly)! The water was cold but the event was heartwarming. The amount of people that appeared and supported such a worthy cause was beautiful, and it was incredible to see people come together to support others.

As a member of the Storm Baseball Polar Plunge Team, I speak for us all when I thank you and tell you all how much we appreciate every single one of you for your heartfelt support.

Ian Kennedy will make the start as the Padres host the Athletics in Peoria this afternoon. He's had a decent Spring so far, allowing two earned runs on four hits in five total innings of work while striking out four batters. Today he is slated for four innings of work, throwing around 60 pitches.

On the hill for the A's will be Sonny Gray, who will try to rebound from a rough start his last time out. In his first and only inning of work against the Dbacks last Thursday, Gray used 35 pitches to get three outs, surrendering four runs on five hits and issuing two walks along the way.

Padres beat Rockies or whatever

Aw crap, you guys. Last week I said I'd recap yesterday's game and ended up totally forgetting about it. I fell asleep during the game and when I woke up I headed over to a friend's house and did some porch drankin'. Several cups of boxed wine in, a three-way broke out. Your intrepid homie did not participate, seeing as how he's ladied up. That, and like Jerry Seinfeld, I don't think I'm cut out for the orgy lifestyle. I mean, I don't have enough disposable income to be buying a bunch of robes and lotions.

Anyway, baseball. From everything I'm seeing, it looks like the Padres won 5-0. Tight. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner was some pun about currency. Did you know he still hasn't given up a run yet this spring? That's p f cool like P.F. Flyers. He stretched out to four innings this outing, and four other dudes mimicked him by shutting down the Rockies for the other five innings. Joe Wieland gave up three hits in two innings, and Jesse Hahn surrendered one in his frame; Rule 5 pick Patrick Schuster and longtime Cleveland reliever Tony Sipp closed the deal out with perfect innings.

As far as offense goes, everyone got involved, but not too much. The eleven Padres hits were notched by eleven different guys, so that was nice and Marxist. Brand-new do-all Alex Castellanos made an impression with a double, as did fringe catcher Rene Rivera, Cashner's birthday buddy Kyle Blanks, and a pair of future Chihuahuas. Those two were Rymer Liriano and Reymond Fuentes, if you must know. Gloveman extraordinaire Ryan Jackson outdid 'em all by going yard, so that'll be nice to remember him by.

They play the A's today, so watch that. I'll try to stay awake through it.
