Reigning Rookie of the Year Jose Fernadez shut down the Padres offense tonight.
Tonight's game was billed as a pitchers' duel, with Andrew Cashner, The Man With The Golden Locks taking on Rookie of the Year Jose Fernandez, who stood undefeated at Marlins Park. Their performances were as advertised, with the two aces combining for 14 strikeouts, 5 walks, 8 hits, and 2 runs in 12.2 innings pitched. Unfortunately, those 2 runs were both on Cashner's line. Dale Thayer and Joaquin Benoit were also touched for a few runs, but it's not like it really mattered, because your offense has to show up if you're going to win.
The Padres lineup hit an abysmal 5 for 32 tonight, while going 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Their one real shot came in the third inning. With one out, Everth Cabrera singled to center. He was joined on the basepaths by Will Venable and Chase Headley, who drew back to back walks. Seth Smith, already off to a hot start, had the bases loaded with only one out... and he swung at the first pitch to ground into a double play. Rally killed, shot twice in the chest and once in the head for good measure.
