Padres 5, Tigers 1: First Series Win Comes Against Cy Young Winner

2013 American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is glad he won't be seeing the Padres again any time soon. The Tigers starter struck out 10 batters, but that didn't keep them from scoring 4 runs off the ace before chasing him off the mound after 5 innings. Tyson Ross, on the other hand, seemed to have solved the troubles plaguing him in his first two starts. He went 7 innings, allowing just one run on 6 hits and a walk.

Jedd Gyorko was the first batter to get a piece of Scherzer, and it was one big piece. The Mountaineer hit a monster shot deep into left field in the bottom of the second. That lead only lasted until the fourth inning, when Torii Hunter led off with a double to right, and came around to score when Victor Martinez hit a line drive to center field. That was the end of Detroit's offense for the day. Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso led off the bottom half of the fourth with back to back walks. Will Venable made Scherzer pay for those mistakes with a bases clearing double. Then Tyson Ross helped his own cause with an RBI single (and yes, his shoulder stayed in its socket). And just to add insult to injury, Xavier Nady hit a homer into the center field beach in the seventh inning.

With their first series win under their belts, the Padres will try to stay hot as the division rival Rockies come into town tomorrow. Eric Stults gets the start at 7:10 PM.
