The Padres announced that Chris Nelson is going on paternity leave, and Jesse Hahn has been called back up to take his roster spot. Hahn had been optioned down two weeks ago not due to poor performance, but to rest his arm which has thrown an unprecedented number of innings this season.
This is Nelson and his wife's first child, a fact that it took minimal Googling to learn. According to this (Louisville, KY) Courier-Journal article from May, the baby was expected in October. I hope that was a typo or misunderstanding, because this is still August. Keep your fingers crossed, or do whatever it is you do to wish for good things, in hopes that all is well.
As for Hahny, why would they call up a starting pitcher two days before roster expansion to take an infielder's roster spot? Well, tomorrow's scheduled starter is Eric Stults. I think you all see where I'm going with this.
[Update, 3:28pm: Well, strike that last guess. A man can dream, right?]
Jesse Hahn is back and will likely be used out of bullpen here on out, BB said. #Padres
