Tyson Ross pitched a stellar game tonight. Three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts in seven shutout innings. He's allowed just one run in his last twelve innings. He had plenty of backup from the defense as they turned three double plays tonight, including two from the outfield.
He didn't have much run support, but the offense did get things started fast. Chris Denorfia and Jedd Gyorko hit a pair of singles, then Jesus Guzman drew a walk to load the bases. Alexi Amarista hit a single to score the only run for seven innings.
Luke Gregerson entered the game in the eighth, and that's when things got a little dicey. With one out, pinch-runner Charlie Culberson stole second. D.J. LeMahieu followed that with a line drive to left, and Culberson was off to the races. Denorfia threw a strike right to the plate, but Culberson came into home hard enough to knock the glove off of Nick Hundley.
There would be no win for Ross, but Gyorko made sure his start wasn't for nothing. He took Matt Belisle's first pitch all the way to the Jack Deck.
[Note by jodes0405, 09/07/13 9:00 PM PDT ] The ball was caught by an awesome Padres fan sporting his luchador mask.
After that, it was time for Huston Street to pick up another save. Michael Cuddyer hit a leadoff single to left. Todd Helton flied out in the same direction. One away. With Nolan Arenado at the plate, Cuddyer made a break for second, right before Arenado flied to center. Jedd Gyorko faked Cuddyer into believing it was a grounder and he was safe. Amarista had no problem catching him at first for the game-ending double play.
Ian Kennedy will go for the sweep against Chad Bettis at 1:10 PM tomorrow.
