The San Diego Padres clinched their first series victory over the Colorado Rockies this season with a 2-1 victory on Saturday at Petco Park.
Jedd Gyorko hit a solo home run off of Matt Belisle in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie. The big hit ensured Tyson Ross' solid performance would not go to waste. Ross still wound up with a no-decision after the Rockies got on the board in the top half of the eighth, but his seven shutout innings, which included just three hits and a pair of walks, allowed the Padres a chance to win the game late.
Gyorko's long ball, an opposite-field shot that cleared the glove of a leaping Michael Cuddyer in right field, served as an immediate counter to DJ LeMahieu's game-tying single just minutes before. LeMahieu's hit was one of just six the Rockies had on the evening.
San Diego mustered only six hits off of Rockies pitchers, but Gyorko collected two of those. Gyorko's first hit helped extend a first inning that saw the Padres eventually score.
The Rockies mounted a couple of late threats, I guess you could say, but Troy Tulowitzki struck out looking to end the eighth and Cuddyer was doubled off of first base on Nolan Arenado's pop out for the last out of the game. Before you're too rough on Cuddy, he attempted a straight steal and was sliding into second base before Arenado's pop fly even reached its peak point.
Don't blame Cuddy, blame stealing.
Chad Bettis, who is still looking for his first big-league win, will oppose Ian Kennedy as the Rox try to avoid the sweep on Sunday.
